When restrictions were lifted earlier this year there was concern about mass immigration from Romania. It proved to be unfounded, but a surprising new trend has emerged. In increasing numbers, companies from the South are travelling to Romania keen to take advantage of its growing economy. Trade agreements with Hampshire mean businesses in the county are securing lucrative deals that could be worth millions of pounds.

The UK and Germany led the way as Europe powered-up a record amount of offshore wind energy last year, it’s emerged. Countries installed 3.1 gigawatts of new sea-based renewable power, making it the continent’s biggest year ever, according to WindEurope. The industry body says rapidly falling costs means investing in offshore wind is now more attractive. The vast majority of new power came from the UK and Germany, but France, Finland and Belgium also connected wind farms to the grid.

Iceland is facing an “exponential” rise in Bitcoin mining that is gobbling up power resources, a spokesman for Icelandic energy firm HS Orka has said. This year, electricity use at Bitcoin mining data centres is likely to exceed that of all Iceland’s homes, according to Johann Snorri Sigurbergsson. He said many potential customers were keen to get in on the act. “If all these projects are realised, we won’t have enough energy for it,” he told the BBC. Mr Sigurbergsson’s calculations were first reported by the Associated Press.

The Romanian Petroleum Exploration and Production Companies Association (ROPEPCA) stands against the NAMR Order approving the Methodology for establishing the reference price for natural gas extracted in Romania. According to this Order, the reference price for natural gas extracted in Romania will be calculated according to the trading prices of the hub from CEGH Vienna, based on a calculation formula made together with the Oil and Gas University of Ploiesti.
